The Hand of God: Finding His Care in All Circumstances
Published in Hardcover by Moody Publishers (October, 1999)
Author: Alistair Begg
Average review score:

If you want to know more about God's Providence, THIS IS IT.
The story of Joseph is well known. What is not well understood is how God was directing Joseph in every circumstance of his life. The way Alistair presents the story of Joseph, will let you see in your own life how God is also in control of ALL of your life's circumstances too.

You will see your life and your future from a more relax perspective once you realize and understand that God is in control making the decisions that are best suited for you. I truly recommend this book for anyone interested in finding God's providence in his/her life.

We Just THINK We Have Problems
To be honest, when our assistant pastor announced that our study group was going to use this book, I didn't think that the book had much to offer me. I was VERY wrong! Alistair Begg does a wonderful job of telling the story of Joseph, Jacob's favorite son. (Anyone thinking that today's families are all mixed up should see how Jacob's family beats anything we hear about in our day.) Many of us have been through hard times, but I doubt any of us have experienced the hardships that Joseph dealt with. Every chapter is full of lessons for our lives, no matter what problems we are struggling with. Begg's writing is clear and easy to read, yet very convicting. Highly recommended!

Hand Rehabilitation: A Quick Reference Guide and Review
Published in Paperback by Mosby (15 March, 1999)
Authors: Nancy Falkenstein and Susan Weiss-Lessard
Average review score:

A MUST-HAVE for the OT/PT/CHT treating the Upper Extremity
I am an OT/CHT who largely owes my success in passing the Hand Certification to the wisdom of these two brilliant authors. Using this book as a guide for studying, a quick reference for treating, and a way to test my skills and knowledge has been a phenomenal learning experience. I feel strongly that this is a necessary part of every therapist's library who treats the upper extremity. It "packs it all in" to a user friendly book with an appendix that doesn't quit. When ever these authors offer a book, a course, an online learning experience, I am first in line. This book will soon become your favorite...as I like to call it "the purple book"! You will not be disappointed!

Hand Rehabilitation A Quick Reference Guide and Review
This book has been extremely beneficial with general review of hand therapy in a concise and interesting manner. I really like the clinical gems! It has also helped me with my study for the Certified Hand Therapy exam by giving practice questions and topics that further direct me in my studies.

Hand, Heart, and Mind: The Story of the Education of America's Deaf People
Published in Hardcover by Dial Books for Young Readers (March, 1994)
Author: Lou Ann Walker
Average review score:

The hands, hearts, and minds of America's Deaf
An intriguing history of the education of the deaf starting with ancient times to the middle ages. In the early 1800s, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet went to Europe and one year later returned with Laurent Clerc, a deaf priest and teacher of the deaf. Together they began the American School for the Deaf. Alexander Graham Bell who was a strong advocate of oralism while Gallaudet endorsed using American Sign Language. These two famous people started a raging war that continues today. There is extensive coverage about the "Deaf President Now" revolt that occurred in 1988 when a hearing president was selected for Gallaudet University (the only university for the deaf). The students successfully demanded that their school have a deaf president. An excellent book about the history of how the deaf have been repressed and slowly becoming liberated. As the mother of a deaf daughter, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

A facinating account of the "under dogs" story!
Hand, Heart, and Mind is an awesome book! It really touched me because I know 3 deaf people. I never knew the hardships that those people went through. I thuroughly enjoyed this book!

The Hand-Carved Creche and Other Christmas Stories
Published in Hardcover by Hill Street Press (January, 2003)
Author: James Kilgo
Average review score:

A wonderful work by a wonderful storyteller
Dr. Kilgo's works are not widely known (as in "popular"), though he was appropriately recognized with the Townsend Prize for Fiction for "Daughter of My People", but his ability to turn a tale is unparalleled. The Hand-Carved Creche and Other Christmas Stories is not as broad in scope as "Daughter of My People", nor is it meant to be. Superficially it is an "easy read", but this is analogous to admiring a gift for its wrapping paper. (By contrast "Daughter of My People" is best savored over a period of days--or even weeks--rather than in a one-shot read.)

Even though the language and structure Kilgo uses in The Hand-Carved Creche are more flowing and perhaps not so finely honed as in his other works, it is Kilgo at his most relaxed best. There is more of Jim Kilgo in this book than in any to date, for what we see are glimpses -- no, more than that, they are long-lasting impressions of the mind and spirit -- into the boyhood of the man to come. But Kilgo's ability to place his reader fully in the context of these Christmas memories also allows the reader to connect to his or her own memories of Christmases past. And we get to ask and reflect on that basic question: what is Christmas really all about?

Not only will you not be sorry you read this book, but you will find yourself drawn to read it again and again as Christmas approaches each year.

Granted, my review of this work is likely somewhat biased by my personal relationship with Jim Kilgo. But I am also no fool: I recognize excellence when I see it.

***The death of Jim Kilgo on Sunday, December 8, 2002, due to pneumonia-related complications means that the world has lost a preeminent novelist and storyteller. He wrote for the love of the language and about his love of family, the outdoors, and friends. He was at the same time a self-confident, determined man and an humble, gentle spirit, never seeking the limelight or the glory. He will be missed.

What a nice way to spend Christmas
I discovered Kilgo through his stunning novel, Daughter of My People. This is a little book, but it is rich--more insight and meaning and substance here that there is in most 300 page books. Kilgo can really turn a phrase. And while his telling of his childhood Christmas stories set in South Carolina is perfect, the only problem if that I was left wanting more.

Hand-Made Books: An Introduction to Bookbinding
Published in Paperback by Search Pr Ltd (March, 1995)
Author: Rob Shepherd
Average review score:

Excellent resource
I am a librarian, and I often resent having to pay a professional bindery to reconstruct poorly-made or worn out bindings. I have used this book to teach myself the basics of book binding with great success, and minimal investment in terms of equipment and supplies. The directions are clear, and the illustrations and photos are generous and helpful. I have recommended this book to colleagues whenever possible.

Best How-to book on bookbinding for the beginner
I've bought a lot of books on bookbinding, but this is the one I found that is the best for the beginner just trying it. Great pictures, easy to follow instructions. Assumes a mininum of special equipment. Its the right place to start

Hand-Shaped Art
Published in Paperback by Good Apple (January, 1989)
Authors: Diane Bonica and Jan Renard
Average review score:

More Than Just Handy
Hand-shaped Art inspires, and, that is its incredible attribute. Looking at one idea, I was pleasantly bombarded with possibilities, especially, creative, interactive bulletin board ideas and writing assignments. Too many teachers fill bulletin boards with glossy posters. This book lets the children participate.

Layout and art are superb, simple, ready to use, and that, my friend, saves time. You will be glad you spent the money on this book for it is full of ideas you can't see until your imagination takes over.

Take, for example, one hand makes a ship's sail, but what a journey it will be when you include travel plans in creative writing, science of the stars and the ocean, attendance count, lunch count, classroom managment, and scary creatures bordering the bulletin board. I saw a sail made from one hand and then...See what I mean? Keep a pen handy for all the ideas that will flood your landscape. You'll never go back to glossy, boring posters again.

Most usefull
As a pre-school teacher I found the book most usefull specialy the holidays and weather art works

Hands Across Time: The Soulmate Enigma
Published in Paperback by Findhorn Press, Inc. (01 May, 1997)
Author: Judy Hall
Average review score:

The best gift you could give a friend suffering heartbreak
This is the only book on soulmates/past lives I've ever read that fully addresses the reasons why you might feel that absolutely soul-shattering connection to someone and still have to part ways, or not be able to be together. She smashes the rose-colored glass picture of soulmates and gives readers a mature understanding that is perfectly aligned with the concept of earthly life as a classroom for soul growth. I have recommended this book to countless friends going through heartbreaks and every single one has found it a great healing experience. I'm back at this site again to re-order because once again I gave away my copy!

If you have experienced a soulmate encounter Read This Book!
Ms Hall tackles a tough subject in "Hands Across Time," and comes as close as is possible to defining just what a "soulmate" really is and why meeting one may be a harrowing experience. It is no exaggeration to say that Ms. Hall's book has saved this writer's sanity by explaining how phenomena connected with the soulmate experience works and where it originates. I earnestly recommend this book to anyone who has had a perplexing or confusing "soulmate" experience.

Hands Around the World: 365 Creative Ways to Build Cultural Awareness & Global Respect (Kids Can)
Published in Library Binding by Gareth Stevens (January, 1999)
Author: Susan Milord
Average review score:

Great book for youth groups :)
As a long time guide leader (like girl scouts in the USA :) ) I use this book all the time with my unit of girls aged 9-14. It is full of wonderful ideas - some practical ones ready to do instantly, some which make the girls stop and think about things, and some which require a bit more planning to make happen.

The book is in a format where there is an entry for each day of the year but I have not used it that way - we just delve into it when we need inspiration, or when we are looking for ideas for a particular theme. The entries include games, crafts, food, information, myths & legends and ideas - all of which can lead you off in other directions if you let them. The book has a good index which is a huge help in finding things when I need them.

I highly recommend this book to other youth group leaders as well as teachers and parents (I can't wait until my children are a little older so I can share it with them :) ). The book does exactly what the title says and I think it would fit in wonderfully well with the objectives of most well known international youth groups.

It would also make a wonderful present for the right kid (aged about 8-14) - especially for those who are self-motivated to explore the world around them, are being home-schooled, or have parents / caregivers who have enough time to do some of the projects with them :)

Hands Around the World: 365 Creative Ways to Build Cultural
For teachers, parents, and other caregivers of children of a broad age range, I highly recommend this book. The ideas are well displayed and organized and, when acted upon, should prove to fulfill their promise of helping to build cultural awareness. The overall upbeat tone of the writing should encourage both adults and children to enjoy it. There are additional appended lists of relevant organizations, suppliers, and book titles. As a children's librarian, I can attest to the potential usefulness of this very handy volume!
